The Villa is a large, private compound on the island of Cyprus. The unifying concept for the gardens of this estate is: A Garden for the Senses. The design engages all of the senses, reflects the natural beauty of the island and serves the varied functional needs of a growing family. Site elements and conditions include mountain vistas, a traditional orthodox chapel, rolling topography and an arid, Mediterranean climate. The family desired an assortment of outdoor spaces including a gentlemen’s retreat, a children’s play ground, formal entertainment areas, a working orchard, and functional kitchen gardens. Using the topography in a sculptural manner to accentuate the spatial expanse and enhance the panoramic views, the chapel and vistas form the axial focal points. Stone and grapevine arbors are the common landscape vocabulary between the outdoor rooms. The Villa is a garden for the body, mind and spirit.
